Materials Needed:

Yarn

·         Bernat Super Value, Steel Blue Heather, 130 yds

·         White worsted weight, small amount

·         Black worsted weight, small amount

Extras

·         2 safety eyes, 10mm

·         Stuffing

·         3.5mm hook

·         Scissors

·         Tapestry Needle


Stitches Key:

sc – single crochet

inc – increase/2 single crochet in same stitch

dec – decrease/single crochet 2 together

hdc – half double crochet

dc –double crochet

ch/s – chain/s

st/s – stitch/es

sl st – slip stitch


Gauge:

9.5 sc and 10 rows = 2 inches


Size:

Finished Elpie is approx. 7” long and 6” tall


Pieces you will need:

·         2 leg A (2 panels each)

·         2 leg B (2 panels each)

·         2 ears (1 panel each)

·         body (2 panels)


Notes:

·         ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as st

·         ch 1 and turn at the end of every row unless otherwise marked

·         when stitching together the pieces make sure to stick your hook through BOTH pieces to make sure they’re sewn together, you will stitch in every row and stitch around the panel, applying any special notes indicated in that portion of the pattern

·         please read through the entire “stitching together” portions of the pattern, as you get to them, before doing the stitching so you have a picture of the entire process before beginning



Leg A (make 2):

Row 1: ch 5, sc 4 (4)

Row 2-10: sc 4 (4)

Fasten off, weave in ends [img 1]

 

Repeat rows 1-10, do not fasten off

 

Stitching together:

Place leg panels, wrong sides together, stitching towards row 1

 

Special notes:

·         (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner of row 1

·         when you reach the bottom of row 1 (optional, this adds the white toes):

o   sc 1

o   change to white, sc 1

o   change to grey, sc 1

o   change to white, sc 1

o   change to grey, continue around

·         leave the top (row 10) unstitched

 

ch 1, sc around

Fasten off, weave in ends, leave a long tail for sewing. Set aside. [leg to the right in img 2]

Leg B (make 2):

Row 1: ch 5, sc 4 (4)

Row 2-10: sc 4 (4)

Row 2: inc, sc 7, inc (11)

Row 3-4: sc 11 (11)

Row 5: dec, sc 7, dec (9)

Row 6: sc 9 (9)

Row 7: dec, sc 5, dec (7)

Row 8: dec, sc 3, dec (5)

Fasten off, weave in ends [img 3]

Attach yarn to the side of row 1, working towards row 8

 

ch 1, sc around

stop upon reaching the other side of row 1, leaving the bottom of row 1 unstitched

 

Fasten off, weave in ends, leave a long tail for sewing. Set aside.



Body:

Row 1: ch 8, inc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5, inc (9)

Row 2: inc, sc 7, inc (11)

Row 3: inc, sc 9, inc (13)

Row 4: inc, sc 11, inc (15)

Row 5: inc, sc 13, inc (17)

Row 6: inc, sc 15, inc (19)

Row 7: inc, sc 17, inc (21)

Row 8-17: sc 21 (21)

Row 18: sc 19, dec (20)

Row 19: dec, sc 18 (19)

Row 20: sc 17, dec (18)

Repeat rows 1-35, do not fasten off, pull up your loop, set aside for the moment


Details:

*Make sure to make the right sides of your body panels opposite each other, so the wrong sides line up when placed together.*

 

Attach your safety eyes between rows 30 & 31, 5 sts from the top of the elephant.

 

Using black, sew on your mouth near the trunk

 

Sew your ears onto the right sides of your body panels onto row 27


Stitching together:

Pick up the loop from the second body panel made, place body panels, wrong sides together, lining up the stitches. Working towards the trunk

 

ch 1, sc around

 

Special notes:

·         inc in each corner of the trunk

·         stuff as you go

·         when you reach the top st of row 1 stop to add a tail:

o   ch 8, sl st 2nd ch from hook, sl st, sc 2, hdc 2, dc

o   continue to sc around


Finishing:

Sew your legs onto your body approximately 3 sts from the sc join, sew on your legs so the white stitches are closer towards the front of your elephant, right sides facing outwards.

 

Using black, attach 3 strands approx. 3 inches in length to the tip of your tail by pulling a loop through the tail and threading the ends through said loop
