Mini Polly the Pterodactyl

Materials Needed:

Yarn

·         Caron Simply Soft, Sunshine, approx. 45 yds

·         Caron Simply Soft, Ocean, approx. 12 yds

Extras

·         2 safety eyes, 7mm

·         Stuffing

·         2.0mm hook

·         Scissors

·         Tapestry Needle


Stitches Key:

sc – single crochet

inc – increase/2 single crochet in same stitch

dec – decrease/single crochet 2 together

ch/s – chain/s

st/s – stitch/es

sl st – slip stitch


Gauge:

10 sc and 11 rows = 2 inches


Size:

Finished mini Polly is approx. 5” long and 7” wingspan


Notes:

·         ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as st

·         ch 1 and turn at the end of every row unless otherwise marked

·         when stitching together the pieces make sure to stick your hook through BOTH pieces to make sure they’re sewn together, you will stitch in every row and stitch around the panel, applying any special notes indicated in that portion of the pattern

·         always attach yarn with a slip st or join your pieces by stitching into the wrong side of your last row



Wings (make 2):

Using blue

Row 1: ch 11, sc 10 (10)

Row 2: dec, sc 8 (9)

Row 3: sc 9 (9)

Row 4: dec, sc 7 (8)

Row 5: sc 8 (8)

Row 6: dec, sc 6 (7)

Row 7: sc 7 (7)

Row 8: dec, sc 5 (6)

Row 9: sc 4, dec (5)

Row 10: dec, sc 3 (4)

Row 11: sc 2, dec (3)

Row 12: dec, sc 1 (2)

Row 13: dec (1)

Row 14: sc 1 (1)

Fasten off, weave in ends.

 

Repeat rows 1-14 using yellow [img 8]

Stitching together:

Place wing panels, wrong sides together, making sure you line up the straight (side A) and angled (side B) sides.

 

Leave the short side (side C) unstitched as it will be closed up when you attach it to the body.

 

Wing A: Attach yellow yarn in the corner of side A and side C, working with yellow panel facing you

Wing B: Attach yellow yarn in the corner of side B and side C, working with yellow panel facing you

Special notes:

·         stitch 3 sc into row 14 of wing

sl st to first sc

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing, set aside. [img 9]

Body:

Using yellow

Row 1: ch 2, inc (2)

Row 2: sc 2 (2)

Row 3: inc, sc 1 (3)

Row 4: sc 3 (3)

Row 5: inc, sc 2 (4)

Fasten off, weave in ends

 

Repeat rows 1-5, do not fasten off [img 1]

You now have 2 nose pieces, row 6 you will stitch across both pieces to join them.

Stitch in bottom bump of chs

Working on the other side of the ch sps, attach yarn to last st [img 6]

Attach your safety between rows 9 & 10 and 2 sts from the top of the head

 

Repeat body panel


Stitching together:

Place your 2 body panels wrong sides together, making sure your faces are point outwards

 

Attach your yarn to the middle of the back, stitching towards the head

 

Special notes:

·         dec where the head meets the back of the neck

·         stitch 3 sc into the point of row 17 of the head

·         stitch 3 sc into each point of row 1 of the 2 nose/mouth pieces

 

ch 1, sc around

sl st to first sc

Fasten off, weave in ends



Finishing:

Sew your wings onto the body, stitching through both panels of the wings, place side A towards the head so she has a straight wing span with side B near her bottom. Weave in any remaining ends.
